Preventative Care

Oakville Dental provides preventive care for the entire family. Your regularly scheduled check-up is often referred to as your preventative hygiene appointment, but there is much more to it than that! Our hygiene team reviews the state of your whole mouth, including gums, teeth, roots and soft tissues. Preventive care services are the most important services we provide. Healthy gums are the foundation of achieving optimal oral health.

Preventive care begins with a comprehensive oral exam, which includes a panoramic x-ray, oral cancer screening, bite evaluation, a jawbone, muscle, and a TMJ joint exam, and a periodontal - gum disease evaluation. The periodontal evaluation will determine what type of cleaning is needed based on the health of your gums. We'll also ask about your medical history, talk about your blood pressure, when indicated, and uncover any general health issues that could potentially relate back to your oral health.

Preventive measures can do wonders for your dental health. A few simple homecare practices, paired with regular visits to your dental professional will go a long way toward maintaining optimal oral health. Daily preventive procedures share the common goal of removing bacteria from the mouth. If allowed to build-up, bacteria adheres to the teeth, tongue and soft tissue which becomes plaque, that over time can mineralize into a hard substance called calculus. Only professional cleanings can remove calculus. Inadequate plaque control is the primary cause of gingivitis (inflamed gums), periodontitis (bacteria gum disease), and oral malodor (bad breath). Patients can minimize bacterial accumulation through regular brushing, flossing, and tongue scraping, and periodic dental hygiene appointments (dental prophylaxis).
